POSITION SUMMARY

 

The Pharmacist, Pharmacy Informatics & Automation serves as the operational bridge between Pharmacy Operations, IT, and Client Implementation teams, ensuring the effective design, implementation, and optimization of all technology supporting pharmacy workflows.

 

This role provides coordination amongst pharmacy systems—including dispensing software, automation and robotics, IVR, databases, inventory control, and RFID—and manages the Pharmacy Systems Administrators. The Pharmacist, Pharmacy Informatics & Automation partners with operations leadership, implementation teams, clients, and internal stakeholders to ensure technology solutions are efficient, compliant, and aligned with program and business objectives.

 

This position reports to the Vice President, Pharmacy Operations, or their designee. The Pharmacist, Pharmacy Informatics & Automation may be asked to assist with pharmacy operations needs or fulfillment production as may arise from time to time.

Responsibilities

Strategic & Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Serve as oversight for all technology supporting pharmacy operations, acting as liaison between Pharmacy Operations, IT, and external partners.
  • Collaborate closely with the Implementation and Client Services teams on the design and deployment of new programs and technology workflows.
  • Establish governance for system upgrades, enhancements, and change control.
  • Develop and maintain a technology roadmap for pharmacy systems, ensuring scalability, security, and compliance.
  • Represent Pharmacy Operations in system strategy and vendor selection processes.

 

System Administration & Optimization

  • Oversee and mentor Pharmacy Systems Administrators responsible for configuration, maintenance, and support of pharmacy technologies.
  • Support lifecycle management for all dispensing platforms, automation systems, IVR/call routing, inventory, and environmental monitoring technologies.
  • Collaborate with IT partners to ensure high system uptime, performance, and integration integrity across all pharmacy systems.
  • Identify and execute opportunities to improve operational efficiency and workflow automation.

 

Implementation & Project Coordination

  • Collaborate with IT project managers and business analysts to define business requirements and translate them into technical specifications.
  • Lead or participate in testing, validation, and user acceptance for system changes, upgrades, and new client programs.
  • Ensure documentation, SOPs, and training materials are current and aligned with system configurations.
  • Coordinate with internal IT teams and external vendors and third-party integrators for interface development, maintenance, and issue resolution.

 

Compliance & Risk Management

  • Ensure all systems and workflows comply with state and federal pharmacy regulations, DEA requirements, and accreditation standards (URAC, NABP, etc.).
  • Partner with Information Security and Quality to maintain audit readiness and business continuity for all technology assets.
  • Participate in internal and external audits related to technology and data governance.

 

Data Integrity & Collaboration

  • Partner with the Data & Analytics team to ensure pharmacy systems provide accurate, reliable data.
  • Validate system configurations and interfaces to support reporting and compliance needs.
  • Communicate system changes that may impact data outputs or dashboards.
  • Use existing reports to identify workflow and process improvement opportunities.

 

Operational Support

  • Provide escalation support for technology disruptions, automation downtime, or system anomalies.
  • Participate in root-cause analysis and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Coordinate off-hours or on-call support for critical system issues as needed.

Qualifications

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in pharmacy, information technology, engineering, or related field; equivalent experience accepted.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in pharmacy operations, informatics, or automation systems management.
  • Proven success coordinating technology initiatives in a regulated pharmacy fulfillment environment.
  • Experience supporting pharmacy management systems (e.g., Epic, EnterpriseRx, PioneerRx, Parata, ScriptPro, or similar).
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate cross-functional teams and manage multiple complex projects simultaneously.
  • Travel to alternate pharmacy sites, conferences, and meetings as needed, typically <20%

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • PharmD and licensure in Indiana preferred but not required.
  • Experience with automation, robotics, IVR, or warehouse systems integration in mail-order or specialty pharmacy settings.
  • Familiarity with HL7, SQL, API integrations, and reporting tools.
  • Project Management certification (PMP, Agile, or equivalent) or Pharmacy Informatics certification a plus.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Deep understanding of pharmacy workflows, dispensing systems, and automation technology.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills across technical and operational domains.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with data-driven decision-making mindset.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, inventory systems, and reporting platforms.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with multiple concurrent priorities.
  • Demonstrated leadership and mentoring skills.
